Bach Flower Remedies for Animals
Published in Paperback by The C.W. Daniel Company Ltd (01 September, 1999)
Authors: Stefan Ball and Judy Howard
Average review score:

Indispensable guide for using Bach Remedies with your pets
As a caretaker of six cats and a dog, I have used Bach Remedies for years with my animals but I've always had to refer to books focusing on the use of the remedies with humans. This book has come to my rescue and I especially like that there are separate chapters on cats and dogs. There is also a separate chapter on use of the remedies wih horses.

The best feature of the book is the second chapter "Using the remedies" where the authors spell out the animal behaviors that can indicate a need for each of the 38 remedies. For example, Crab Apple is the remedy for cleansing and is indicated for a animal who does excessive grooming or chews on its fur or feathers.

The only negative aspect for me, as an American, is the very British slant in the resources lists and in the case studies. However, that is a small complaint in the overall usefulness of this title.

Balancing Life's Demands

Author: Howard J. Grant
Average review score:

Finding the right perspectives
J. Grant Howard gives an incredible amount of wisdom for those of us who sometimes struggle with our priorities. I often hear people say if there is one struggle they have in life it's with priorities. If you struggle with finding what relationships or "items" in your life need the most attention, then this book is for you. Howard shares from experience. From being a pastor, a dad, a seminary professor, and a man who loves the Lord, this book shares from the heart of someone who has lived out what he is writing. Because of this, this book is transparent and gives hope to those who live in the "tyranny of the urgent".

Balloons to Jets: History of Aeronautics in Illinois
Published in Hardcover by Beachcomber Books (December, 1957)
Author: Howard L. Scamehorn
Average review score:

A Classic Work on Aeronautics in Illinois is Republished
It is possible, though perhaps unlikely, that in future generations the twentieth century will be remembered more for the rise of aviation than for any other single attribute. Certainly the invention and development of the airplane has fundamentally altered the lives of all individuals on this planet. It has made possible the movement of both inanimate cargo and living things anywhere in the world in less than a day. That means that both lifesaving medicines and the most deadly viruses are only a planeride away from anywhere on the globe. The airplane has also made possible both pathbreaking scientific research not duplicable in any other environment and the dropping of devastating bombs on targets far removed from the front line of battle. Its positive and its destructive uses became an important part of the fabric of human life during the century just past.

The state of Illinois has been a place important to the development of the airplane in the twentieth century and this book by Howard L. Scamehorn is an welcome chronicle of that role for the first half of the century. "Balloons to Jets" is a reprint of a classic work that first appeared in 1957. Well-received at the time, and justifiably so, it has remained the standard work on aeronautics in Illinois to the present.

Scamehorn covered the full range of activities in aviation during the period between 1855 and 1955, beginning with ballooning in the latter half of the nineteenth century through the various activities taking place in Illinois to mid-century. Accordingly, he deals with the rise of the aviation industry, air meets and contests, barnstorming, the air mail, military aeronautics, the development of airlines, sport and utility flying, the growth of airports from bonfires and grass strips to navigational transponders and rental care agencies, and the development of the regulatory environment. Of course, appearing as it did in 1957, "Balloons to Jets" only touched on the revolution in aeronautics that came with the development of jet transports.

Nearly fifty years have passed since "Balloons to Jets" was first published and no one has yet provided an overview narrative of aviation in Illinois that updates this work for the period since the 1950s. Since that is the case, I wish the author had written a few additional chapters that could have been included in this reprint to "Balloons to Jets." I do not want to complain too loudly, however, for it is nonetheless an excellent work. Perhaps someone else will yet write a history of aviation in Illinois that takes up where Scamehorn left off.

This is an outstanding work of synthesis and a model entrée for students into the history of aeronautics in one region. It outlines the major themes and offers a valuable perspective on the rise of one of the core technologies of the twentieth century. Its availability in this paperback reprint is most welcome.

The Baltimore Clipper

Author: Howard Irving Chapelle
Average review score:

A great modelers resource
Chapelles Baltimore Clipper is a much needed work concerning a type of sailing vessel that is unfortunatly overlooked by most Naval Historians. Chapelle begins with several earlier types of vessels thal may have been the forerunner(s) of the Clippers and continues through the American Revaloution, the War of 1812, the slave trade, to the types decline in the mid 19th century. Included are hull plans, deck plans, and sail plans, all take offs of actual ships of this type. Also covered are weapons and weapons placement. This is a must have book for anyone wanting to build an authentic model of a vessel of this type or for anyone interested in American ships in the age of sail.

Baseball's Zaniest Stars

A terrific baseball book for kids.
This is actually my second book report on "Baseball's Zaniest Stars". I read it in seventh grade, and did a book report on it, and I'm doing one here. "Baseball' Zaniest Stars" is a great book for introducing kids to the history and folklore or the wonderful game of baseball. Of course, the topic of the book is the "zaniest" players. In the book, I learned about Bobo Newsome, and how many times he was traded (a lot), the young Casey Stengel playing outfield for the Brooklyn Dodgers, putting a bird under his cap before he took the field, and releasing it during the inning, Rabbit Maranville with his antics like putting soap chips in his mouth, and then foaming at the mouth in front of his teammates, who backed away from him, thinking that he had rabies, and most memorably Babe Herman, who caused a catastrophe for the daffy Dodgers of the 1920's, causing havoc on the basepaths, and causing the Dodgers to have three men on one base. I recommend this book highly. By the way, I think that I did a better book report on this when I was in seventh grade---- I think i received an A+ on that one----on this one I probably deserve an F!!!!!

Authors: Ginger Howard and Cheryl Kirk Noll
Average review score:

A multicultural winner!
This book delivers a keen insight to the impact of micro-lending as a positive force for change. The story tells how a young woman and four of her friends, with seed money borrowed from an innovative bank in Bangladesh, change their lives by starting their own businesses. It works on many levels including multiculturalism, women's rights, capitalism and entrepreneurship. Based on the real success of the Grameen Bank, this is the kind of story that all western children need to understand in an ever growing global village. This book has recently been listed as one of the Best Children's Books of the Year from Bank Street College and also received a 2003 Skipping Stones Honor Award in the Multicultural and International Books category.
